Additional Learning needs at Ysgol Yr Hafod, Johnstown

At Ysgol Yr Hafod, we are committed to the successful inclusion of pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Within our school, every teacher is a teacher of all pupils including those with ALN.

At our school we use the definition of ALN from the Additional Learning needs (ALN) code of practice 2021, (Pg 28) which is a statutory document that explains what organisations are required to do by law to meet the ALN of children and young people. It imposes requirements on governing bodies of maintained schools and further education institutions, local authorities, local health boards and NHS trusts.

As a school, we are committed to working together to meet the needs of all our children and help them to reach their full potential. We aim to ensure their needs are met through high quality teaching and learning provision. As part of a graduated response, we implement support at a universal and targeted universal level and through additional learning needs provision.

Please see the following attachments below for further information on the graduated response and our school offer.

Additional Learning Needs Reforms

The new ALN system in Wales is replacing the Special Educational (SEN) system and is being introduced over 4 years from September 2021 to August 2025. The reforms from SEN to ALN were described by the Welsh government as a complete overhaul of a system that was no longer fit for purpose.

The ALN reforms have 3 overarching aims set as set out in the Additional Learning needs education Tribunal Wales Act 2018.

  • A signal system for children from birth, pupils in schools and students in collages regardless of level of need. Each learner with ALN will be given a statutory ‘Individual Development Plan’.
  • Closer collaboration between the NHS and local government; and
  • A more transparent system to avoid disagreement and resolve disputes.
